The Fresno Historical Society invites you to the next Fields of Fresno Ag Tours.  This one is a Dairy Tour: From Cow to Carton to Cone.  Satisfy your sweet tooth and your sense of adventure with a day the whole family can enjoy! Dairy farming has long been an essential part of life in the Central Valley, but how much do you really know about the cows and people behind the dairy products on your table? Can you tell a Jersey cow from a Holstein? This September, step behind the scenes to meet some of Fresno’s happiest cows, explore the journey from farm to dairy case, and discover the care, science, and hard work that go into producing the milk, cheese, butter, and ice cream enjoyed every day. Top off the adventure with a delicious ice cream treat at Kearney Mansion.  The day begins at RAW FARM, a fifth-generation family-owned dairy founded by the McAfee family in 1998. What began as a vision for a pasture-based dairy has grown into one of California’s most recognized raw dairy operations, producing milk, cream, butter, kefir, and cheddar cheese from a single Central Valley farm. Although RAW FARM products are now found in hundreds of stores, the operation remains rooted in Fresno County and continues to be managed by the family behind the brand.

Guests will board a tour wagon for a guided visit led by RAW FARM founder Mark McAfee. Along the way, they will meet Jersey and Holstein cows and learn how milk moves from the dairy barn through chilling, filtering, testing, packaging, and distribution. Visitors will also discover how the farm approaches herd care, seasonal grazing, water recycling, food safety, and cold-chain delivery. This stop offers a rare opportunity to hear the farm’s story directly from its founder while gaining a closer look at what it takes to move milk from “grass to glass.”  Fresno State’s 1,000-acre campus farm laboratory will offer guests a closer look at the Manuel Mancebo Jr. and Katye Mancebo Dairy Production Unit, one of the university’s largest student-run agricultural operations. Here, students gain hands-on experience caring for an all-female herd of Holstein, Jersey, and Brown Swiss cattle while learning every stage of modern dairy management.  Led by Dr. Jessica Townsend Graybeal, an assistant professor in Fresno State’s dairy science program with a background in animal genetics and reproduction, guests will explore how the herd is fed, milked, monitored, and cared for throughout the year. Individual cows can produce roughly eight to nine gallons of milk each day, depending on breed, offering an impressive look at the scale, science, and student dedication behind Fresno State’s dairy program.  From the Fresno State Dairy Unit, guests will continue the experience with a walk across campus to O’Neill Park, passing additional farm animals and agricultural facilities along the way. Located within Fresno State’s agricultural grounds, the park offers a shaded and inviting setting for a catered lunch from Max’s Bistro. Surrounded by the sights of the university farm, guests can relax, enjoy their meal, and take in another side of Fresno State’s hands-on agricultural education before continuing the day’s dairy adventure.   From Fresno State, guests will make a brief stop at the Gibson Farm Market, where they will have the opportunity to browse and purchase Fresno State-grown produce, meats, dairy products, and other locally made goods connected to the university’s agricultural programs. This campus favorite offers another look at how student learning, agricultural production, and farm-to-market experiences come together.   The day will conclude back at Kearney Mansion Museum with an exclusive Ampersand Ice Cream Social. After meeting the cows and learning how dairy products move from the farm through production and distribution, guests can enjoy a locally made ice cream treat and relax on the historic grounds of Kearney Mansion.  This family-friendly agricultural adventure begins with check-in at 7:20 a.m. at Kearney Mansion Museum, where guests will enjoy a light breakfast before boarding the motor coach. The tour will travel to RAW FARM and Fresno State for a day of behind-the-scenes dairy experiences, agricultural education, local shopping, and opportunities to meet the animals and people behind Central Valley dairy production. The motor coach is expected to return to Kearney at approximately 2:25 p.m., followed by the ice cream social from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m.  From comparing Jersey and Holstein cows to learning how dairy products are handled, tested, and prepared for market, this tour offers a closer look at the care, science, and people behind the dairy foods enjoyed every day. Gather the family, bring your curiosity, and join us for a day of farm stories, campus agriculture, local flavors, and a sweet finish at Kearney Mansion.  Tickets are limited, so purchase yours soon to reserve your place.  For tickets and more information go to https://www.valleyhistory.org/ag-tour.

Second & Fourth Wednesdays starting June 23rd

The Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health in collaboration with The Source LGBT+ Center and the Fresno EOC LGBTQ Center will provide no-cost Pop-Up groups in Fresno County starting June 23, 2021.  The Pop-Up groups are a way to provide affirming, supportive and safe space for local LGBTQ+ persons.  Pop-Up groups seek to focus on protective factors so to reduce risk factors for suicide, substance use and

mental illness.  The project plans to conduct population specific engagement, support, affirmation, and education for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults as well as for family members and care takers. These efforts have been utilized in ways to reduce the risk factors for suicide in the LGBTQ community. While funded through the County’s Mental Health Services Act-Suicide Prevention efforts, the program is not focused on suicide

prevention specifically, but on protective factors so to lessen the risks for suicidal ideation and suicides.  Belonging is a protective factor, and in instances where youth may not feel that they belong, in their home, in their classrooms, etc., having support groups can fill that void and provide some belonging and start to reduce some of the risk factors. The Pop Ups will provide some critical protective factors by providing:

Connections to other adults who are not parents. Safe space, closeness to caring friends, awareness, and access to local health services, as well as support to parents so to strengthen connectedness with their child and learn how to better support their youth.   To learn about the Pop-Up groups and/or participate interested persons can contact The Source LGBT+ Center’s Spencer Salazar at spencer@thesourcelgbt.org . The initial groups will be on-line from 4pm-6pm starting on June 23, 2021. Groups will meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays. The groups will be virtual initially with plans for in-person locations being developed.

Starting Now:

"Covid 19, a Play," was written by Patricia Wells during the height of the pandemic in 2020 which swept through cities and states infecting communities and hitting farmworkers and workers in food processing industries especially hard; causing significant fatalities in the Central Valley and throughout the country. As the pandemic raged it was the labor of farmworkers and low-wage workers that kept the country alive, yet they were given no protections. This play was written so that their sacrifices will not be forgotten.   The play is about a small farmworker family living in the outskirts of town, in which a member comes down with Covid catching the family completely off guard. Knowing nothing about the virus which invades and threatens their lives and facing an uncertain future, the family must depend on the leadership, vigilance and guidance of the mother and her son, as they scramble for information and help as to how to protect themselves from the deadly grip of the virus.
